The Relationship Between Christian Couples and Their In-Laws

Introduction

In our societies today there exist different kinds of relationships between in-laws. Some in-laws are very close, and others can’t even look at each other. Some talk to each other every day, and others wish the other side were dead. This article seeks to improve the relationship between Christian couples and their in-laws.

To be able to live at peace with your in-laws there are certain things couples should avoid

  • First, we must avoid preconceptions and be open in our dealings with them. We should get rid of any assumptions and be candid with our in-laws.
  • Second, avoid acting like strangers. Let them see you as another child of theirs and not as a stranger.
  • Third, act wisely in all decisions relating to your in-laws, especially when it comes to how you speak to them.
  • Fourth, don’t be proud. Keep your ego in check and remain humble. Always be patient with them and exhibit maturity.

Now that we are done talking about how couples should relate with their in-laws, we will also address how in-laws should relate with their sons or daughters.

  • As an in-law, you should give breathing space to your sons or daughters to enable them to build a godly home. Once they leave your house, please let them live in peace with their new family. You can try to help or give advice only when they ask for it. Avoid intruding into your son or daughter’s marriage.
  • In-laws should give godly counsel to their married sons and daughters without imposing their views on them. Don’t have the mentality that “It’s my way or the highway.”
  • In-laws can also support their children in prayers, not simply with money and other physical materials.

The relationship between Christian couples and their in-laws may be different around the world, but every Christian couple should adorn their in-laws with respect and honor, while the in-laws too should reciprocate the gesture. Like we always say, respect is reciprocal. In everything we do, let us let love remain and rule over our homes.
Live at peace with your in-laws and remain humble at all times – Heb. 12:14.
