Why Pray

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer (Romans 12:11-12).

Prayer is most talked about teaching in the church today but also the least understood. What is prayer and why pray? Prayer is the act of communicating with God. Communicating here means talking to Him and Him talking to you. Not a one way affair of only talking to God.

Many people pray to God and fail to listen to Him because they think prayer is just talking. Prayer has undergone great dynamics and has now turned to a lot of selfishness. The prayer life of most people is God give me this and that.  The prayer life of an individual basically shows the level of growth of the person in the faith. This is not to say that you should not ask from God. As a matter of fact, God shall supply all your needs if you ask Him, for the fullness of all that is in heaven and on earth is in His hands and He will never let you down.

The Pentecostals and Charismatics have also turned it to a lot of tongues and fanaticism. They pray in tongues for every prayer raised in the church which is not acceptable. Tongues speaking is good, no doubt, but I would rather speak five intelligible words than ten thousand words in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:19). Just because you pray in tongues does not mean you are highly spiritual. As a matter of fact many tongues in the Church are just bubbling and not real. Today we are going to address a very important topic “Why Pray”.

Prayer brings you closer to the Father and makes tremendous power available. It is a relationship, and relationship grows through communication. It is not in the literal words used when praying but who exactly is using those words. That is why the same words can be used by two different people and one will work or be backed with power and the other won’t. It is not mere words but relationship. Over and over again people think just using the name of Jesus will make power available but that is a misconception. The seven sons of Sceva tried casting a demon out using the name of Jesus and they ended up bleeding themselves out (Acts 19:13-17).

When you pray, you develop your inner man. This makes you a conqueror in all you do. When your inner man is strong, you will go for the word of God. When your inner man is strong you will talk to someone about Jesus, Fear and anxiety will not be your problem; you have mastery over conditions around you. But when the inner man is weak, you are limited in so many ways and can’t do what you are supposed to.

Conclusion

Prayer is the key to spiritual mastery and dominion on earth. Who would think that Jesus who is the Son of God would even spend time to pray. He prayed because He knew the importance of prayer. This is a call to prayer. Every believer is to walk in this without stress. The reason why most people don’t pray is because they are always too busy and tired to do so. Take time off and spend time with God and I promise you your life will never be the same again because prayer can do whatever God can do.
