How To Love Through Service

Helping

13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another (Galatians 5:13).

How to show love

The main means through which love can be shown is through service. The way you serve God/ man shows the extent to which you love God/man. One will serve gladly when he loves the one he is serving and another may even frown before obeying an instruction. Discipline is the lowest form of discipleship but one who does it through love is favoured and blessed.

Luke 10:30-35

The good Samaritan

The scripture above speaks about a Good Samaritan who expressed his love by caring for the injured man. Love which is not expressed is dead. It was his compassion that moved him to take care of the injured man. It is possible the priest was going to pray or offer offerings to God but did he show love? Emphatically No, but the Samaritan did. Love ought to be expressed to one another through service. Service can be in the form of caring, being compassionate and kind to one another. One day while Jesus was talking with His disciples, He said, “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12NIV). He was referring to the end times; a time when people would stop caring for anyone else but themselves and those times are here now.

However, you have to understand that these words were given as a warning not to become cold like others. The Lord expects you to care for others and to display His love through your actions. He doesn’t want you to become cold and callous like the rest of the world. The Bible says, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10). This means you should care about other people, especially your brothers and sisters in Christ. Consciously look for opportunities to be helpful and express your love.

Story

Once I took a taxi to church and as I got down from the taxi I left my phone. Well I told a couple of people in the church and some tried to console me and said I shouldn’t worry for I will get a new phone, others also thought it was funny and said the new owner has come for it. In all that I was never moved to even worry.

To cut the story short, the taxi driver called my cousin and asked her to tell me to meet him for the phone. What caused this driver to do such a thing? In another case, I never got my phone back. I believe this driver understood what love meant and was moved with compassion and care towards another brother.

After getting the phone I was thinking about what to do for him, I called him and asked whether he owned the car. He said no and miraculously, in a week, 8 days to be precise, he called me and said someone has bought him a new taxi. That is the power of the Holy Spirit. But that is not what my focus is. My focus is on the compassion and care he had to return the phone. This is service and that is how to show love, even to those you don’t know.

Conclusion

When people rejoice about something nice, that’s an opportunity to join in and rejoice with them. In the same vein, if something bad happens, show that you care and encourage those affected with your kind words and actions. Look around you today and ask yourself, “How can I show some care today? How can I touch a life today? Then look out for someone in need and reach out to meet their need. That is how to show God’s love that has been shared in your heart.
