Giving – A Way of Life

Why we should give?

The most basic way of showing love is to give. There is a concept about giving first fruits and tithes and offerings which is taught in scriptures from the Old to the New Testament. It is good to give money and other offerings (valuables) to the Lord. When giving it should be in a joyful mood or state and not as if you are being forced to do so. Let each one do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion for God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). All this is good but the church now concentrates on giving substances in the form of money and forgetting the most important which is one’s own self as a sacrifice unto God. For that is what God wants (your life).

¹⁶ For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

This is a very popular verse that is known by so many people but is the least understood. For God so loved the world that He gave. God’s love moved Him to give. And what did He give but Himself. This set example is what we should follow.

After my third year in the university, I traveled to China on a project during my long vacation to teach the less privileged children. We thought them for some weeks and something amazing happened that I would never forget. The kids decided to do a sending off party for the international volunteers. All the other classes were having fun and partying but when it got to my class it was different. My students were in tears and were crying because they were going to miss me. We all cried; this showed the bond we had for those few weeks. But when I went back to school for my final year and was pondering over it.

The Lord spoke to me clearly saying that the tears back then was to show our love but what do I have to show for my love for Him. I cried because my first thoughts were other things other than myself before He brought my attention to it. Now I ask you the same question. What do you have to show for the love of God? Is it the tithe that you give, your offering to support projects, the church and charity or is it your life. (Take some minutes to ponder over it).

Conclusion

God doesn’t need your money if He can’t have you, all He needs is you. Giving yourself to Him is the greatest thing you can ever do to show your love for God.
