Four Key Hindrances To Prayer

A Prayerless Soul

“Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:19-20

What a blessing to know that we can communicate directly to the Lord in prayer and be answered without any regret. Prayer times are moments of heavenly glory and spiritual ecstasy. Our spirits are refreshed which makes us sensitive to the Spirit. Prayer is not only a time of asking God for something but a time of rich fellowship with the Father. Prayer is a key and a powerful weapon to the believer but this weapon is limited. This article goes a long way to address some of the limits and will help you to keep on track. Knowing these four key hindrances to your prayers will rekindle your prayer life and make prayer more enjoyable.

Prayer is first and foremost limited by sin

Sin is most talked about in our churches but not well understood. Sin can simply be defined as anything done without faith (Romans 14:23). A Christian’s life is a life of faith and not by sensory perception (2 Corinthians 5:7). Sin is therefore not the action that has been done but is what has been done before the action. As the psalmist says “if I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened” (Psalms 66:18).

Prayer can be limited by incomplete obedience

Incomplete obedience is not different from sin because what has been said was not fully completed. A bucket of pure water with a pinch of salt is no longer 100% pure. An instruction not obeyed to the fullest is an instruction not obeyed at all.

Prayer is limited by carnality

When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures (James 4:30). God does not condone carnality in its little sense. The motive of your asking should therefore be to bless people because God has made you to be the saviour of the world. You are important for Him to accomplish His goal. The sure way to get your prayer answered is to seek the glory of God.

Prayer is limited by unbelief

The Bible says that if you say to the mountain that be thou removed into the sea and do not doubt in your heart, you will have whatever you say (Mark 11:23). If you pray and you don’t believe, it won’t work anyway. Faith in God’s Word is all you need to have your prayers met; the faith that works through love. For without it, it will be impossible to please God.
