Humans are the highest form of God’s creative activity and have therefore been endowed with vast creative abilities to solve problems. This has led to the invention of various machines and safety devices including contraceptives. Contraception is the use of devices (condom), drugs or surgery to control child birth. What should be the Christian’s view on contraception? That is a debate among many churches and denominations now. To remain neutral is to say that anything goes even if it violates God’s principles.

Some people argue that the prevention of pregnancy as in the use of contraception is different from the termination of pregnancy since the sperm has not fertilized the ovary and human life has not yet begun. They are all preventive measures. The only difference is they all occur at different stages. God speaks emphatically in Jeremiah 1:5 that He knew us even before we were formed in our mother’s womb. That is to say that before the foetus was formed God knew us. Terminating a foetus is not different from suffocating a new born baby or using contraceptives.

In the institution of marriage, children are divinely ordered both to fulfil God’s divine purposes for the human race and for the repopulation of the earth. In Genesis 38 Onan, a brother of Er was slain because he practised coitus interruptus (spilling the semen when ejaculating) with the intension of not giving children to continue his brother’s lineage. Some people argue that he was killed because of his intention and not the act. This is not true because in Deuteronomy 25:7-10, the Bible outlines what should be done to someone who refuses to continue their brother’s lineage and death was not mentioned. I don’t think God will go contrary to His own laws. He was killed because of his violation to the principles laid by God.

The Bible not specifying the various methods of contraception does not mean it is only talking about coitus interruptus and not condom use or pills. It is one and the same thing packaged differently. God does not agree to the use of contraceptives. There is no excuse that is convincing enough to breaking the word of God.
