Value Spiritual Things
In Genesis, when Esau was asked for his birthright, his response clearly showed that he didn’t place any value on sacred things (Genesis 25:29-34). Esau said in Genesis 25:32 that “look, I am about to die, what good is the birthright to me?” Esau knew the birthright had blessings, but it didn’t mean anything to him so he sold it to his brother Jacob for a morsel of food and didn’t consider the spiritual implication of that act. That single action cost him his inheritance. To value spiritual things is to put more premium on spiritual things than things of the senses.
Esau was sensed ruled. Hebrews 12:17 says “afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. He could bring about no change of mind, though he sought the blessing with tears. God was making reference to Esau in the New Testament. He allowed need and pleasures of his flesh to rule him. He didn’t show reverence to sacred things and that caused him his blessings as firstborn.
Not to esteem spiritual things is to be carnally minded. For we live by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). To be carnally minded is to set your mind on the natural things of life; on the things you can perceive with your senses that gives immediate gratification. The Bible says that to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace (Romans 8:6). This scripture refers to spiritual death which is the separation from the life of God. When your actions are carnal, you cannot please God because a carnal mind is enmity against God.
So refuse to be led by your senses; rather, let God’s Word be your motivation because you are no longer ruled by the flesh but by the Spirit. Value spiritual things like Jacob! He was after the blessing, which is spiritual. Focus all your attention on spiritual things and the natural will follow.
