Destiny Biblically Defined

7

There are several definitions of destiny. This article therefore seeks to define destiny from the biblical perspective. Destiny is the purpose of God for man’s life. It is a divinely pre-planned destination and designation in life (Jeremiah 1:15). As a matter of fact it is the totality of God’s counsel for a man. Destiny is what God has decided concerning man even before he/she was conceived. This was the same for our Lord Jesus Christ who was called to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21). God’s destiny for man is great, full of peace and hope to give him an expected end (Jeremiah 29:11).

Categories of Destiny

Destiny can be broadly categorised into two groups.

The first is the general destiny which is an expression of God’s thought for all of mankind (John 3:16; Peter 3:9). It is God’s desire that all men be saved. He doesn’t want anyone to burn in hell with the devil. But He has given man free will and therefore anyone that goes to hell is there because they chose to. Every believer is to be His ambassador on earth (2 Corinthians 5:20-21) and to prosper spiritually and physically (3 John 1:2).

The second category is the specific destiny which is God’s divine purpose for each individual. This is a divine assignment for which such people have been created (Acts 26:15-18).

Examples of People Destined for Greatness

God destined greatness for Abraham (Genesis 18:17-18). God called Abraham from among his people and destined him for greatness (Genesis 12).

God destined that Samson would divinely deliver the Israelites from the Philistines (Judges 13:5).

God destined that Paul become the carrier of the Good news to the Gentiles (Acts 9:15).

Everyone has these categories working in their lives. However, our attitudes to God affect the attainment or otherwise of your destinies (John 15:5; Judges 16:30). I pray you will be able to fulfil your destiny in life in Jesus name.

If you are not born again, you are not in the position to even realise your destiny. It is therefore very important for you to accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour now. Click here.
