And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord (Luke 2:10-11).

Merry Christmas! What a great day to serve the Lord with gladness and bless the people around you. Christmas is a day people all around the world express love, warmth and courtesy, while expecting to receive the same. But beyond the joyful revelry and merriment of the day, what does Christmas mean to you? What is the exciting thing about it? Why is it worth celebrating? What is the spiritual benefit of the birth of Jesus Christ to everyone in the world? Why on earth did Jesus come?

Meaning of Christmas

The exciting thing about Christmas isn’t the reindeers, Christmas trees, colourful Christmas lights, decorations and carols! The big thing about Christmas is the purpose for which Christ was born; the reason He came. Firstly, 1 John 3:8 gives us a clear idea: “… For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.” He came to destroy he works of the devil.

After His death on the cross, the Bible lets us know that Jesus descended into hell (Ephesians 4:9), where He defeated satan and the cohorts of hell and made an open spectacle of them (Colossians 2:15). He paralyzed satan, rendered him completely powerless, and gave you authority over him! His victory over satan, sin, sickness, disease and death was for you and the victory is worth celebrating. This is the real reason to be excited about Christmas!

Secondly, Jesus came that you might have life – the God-life – to the fullest (John 10:10). You’re the reason He came; you’re the reason He was born. The Bible says “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given” (Isaiah 9:6). God’s love made all this possible. When you understand this, you’d realize that the birth of Jesus Christ (Christmas), which is marked all over the world today, shouldn’t be a thing of seasonal euphoria but something to celebrate and shout about every day.
