What and How to Meditate

What to meditate

The Bible in Matthew 4:4 admonish us that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. By that statement, Jesus acknowledged the importance of physical food in keeping the body alive, but placed greater premium on the need to feed your spirit with the Word of God. Man is a spirit not a body, and his human spirit feeds on the Word. Just as the body requires the energy generated from food to function properly, your spirit needs the Word of God to remain healthy, vibrant and function effectively. The reason why there are a lot of stale Christians is because of the inability to meditate on the Word of God.

How to meditate

This is where meditation plays an important role. The Bible says blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers (Psalm 1-3). The Hebrew word for meditation is “Hagah” which means to ponder or to murmur in pleasure or anger. Meditation here means to mutter the Word; talking the Word under your voice (breathe), like a soliloquy.

In meditating, it is not about how much you read and it is not just memorizing scriptures although you need to memorize before you meditate. Physically, it is not how much you eat but how much you digest that is important. The same goes for meditation. You meditate by taking one verse at a time and digesting it. Memorizing scripture is what precedes meditation because you need to memorize before you can mutter.

Conclusion

Meditation is what makes the Word come alive in you. That is when you hear the Voice of God because God loves to talk about His Word. Mutter the words slowly and as you do it the Holy Spirit will bring other scriptures to confirm and make clear whatever you are meditating on.
